Led by Arthur Okonkwo, a dual fellowship trained Consultant Ophthalmologist, we specialise in corneal transplantation, cataract and refractive surgery, with additional expertise in keratoconus, dry eye, and advanced laser vision correction.
Arthur graduated from Newcastle University Medical School in 2014 with Distinction and an intercalated Master of Research in Transplantation.
Arthur underwent Clinical Academic Ophthalmology training in Leeds and Manchester. He undertook additional training in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery at two of the best eye hospitals in the world, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from Ulster University and the Certificate of Laser and Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
Arthur has brought these skills to Leeds as a Consultant Ophthalmologist and leads an NHS and private clinic treating patients with cornea, cataract and vision correction needs from Yorkshire, the North East and the East Midlands..
Arthur is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds and provides fellowship training to the next generation of specialists after undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. He holds a Master of Research in Transplantation with Distinction and as a researcher, has obtained over £300,000 worth of international grants/prizes and published over 30 peer-reviewed articles.
Arthur is honoured to be part of Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, the largest teaching hospital in Europe. Arthur is passionate about improving vision and restoring ocular comfort through educating patients about their options and using advanced, evidence-based techniques to deliver the best possible outcomes.
Arthur is a kind and empathetic clinician, he puts his patients at the centre of their own care giving them the information to decide what treatment best improves their quality of life.
Arthur combined his medical training with a non-league football career, captaining Newcastle University before representing Wythenshawe AFC and Grimsby Borough. Arthur has also won two Medical Football World Championships playing for Great Britain.
St. James’s Laser Vision provides state-of-the-art laser refractive eye surgery for both NHS and private patients at a specialist unit based at St. James University Hospital in Leeds. The unit is equipped with the very latest refractive laser and associated equipment, enabling it to offer the most advanced treatments- both to private patients and to complex NHS patients.
St. James’s Laser Vision provides its’ refractive surgery service in an academic environment under close scrutiny of our peers and overseen by the authority of the NHS Trust.
All income derived from the laser service is reinvested directly into the St. James’s University Hospital’s eye department, funding the most sophisticated eye care available to NHS patients.
