Why I do what I do

The ability to restore and optimise sight is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.

I was drawn to ophthalmology — and in particular corneal and vision correction surgery — because it combines technical precision with lasting improvements in patients’ lives.

My approach is shaped not only by surgical expertise, but also by the high standards developed through a background in competitive sport. I believe that every patient presents with unique needs, expectations, and concerns, and deserves an equally individualised approach to care.

My aim is to achieve outcomes that are not only excellent, but genuinely life‑enhancing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about eye care

What is a Consultant Ophthalmologist?

A Consultant Ophthalmologist is a senior eye specialist who has completed extensive training and holds the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). Consultants provide diagnosis and management of complex eye conditions, perform specialist surgical procedures, and often contribute to medical education and research. If they provide vision correction surgery they should also hold the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Certificate of Laser and Refractive Surgery (CertLRS).

This means Mr Okonkwo has completed additional specialist training (fellowships) at two leading eye hospitals beyond his core ophthalmology training. This provides exposure to a wider range of techniques, conditions, and approaches, enhancing his expertise.

Yes, Mr Okonkwo leads both NHS and private clinics at Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust. NHS patients can be referred to him through their GP or optician for specialist assessment and treatment.

What is the difference between LASIK and PRK?

Both are laser vision correction procedures that reshape the cornea to correct refractive errors. LASIK involves creating a corneal flap, whilst PRK works on the corneal surface directly. The choice between them depends on individual eye anatomy and other factors, which Mr Okonkwo will discuss during consultation.

Recovery from corneal transplantation depends on the type of transplant performed and ranges from 1 month to 2 years for vision to stabilise fully. Regular monitoring appointments are essential during this period. Mr Okonkwo will provide detailed aftercare instructions and support throughout recovery.

Keratoconus cannot be cured, but it can be managed effectively to stabilise the condition and support vision. Corneal cross-linking helps strengthen the cornea and slow progression, whilst CAIRS, laser eye surgery or specialised contact lenses can improve visual acuity. Regular monitoring is important to adapt management as needed. In the vast majority of cases, yes. To thoroughly examine the health of the back of your eye (the retina and optic nerve) and to accurately assess conditions like cataracts, Mr Okonkwo will need to instil dilating eye drops. These drops take about 20 to 30 minutes to work and will make your vision blurry and sensitive to light for several hours. Therefore, it is strongly advised that you do not drive yourself to or from your appointment.
