Overview

Dry Eye Syndrome is a highly prevalent, chronic condition that occurs when your eyes either do not produce enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly due to poor quality. This tear film instability leads to inflammation of the ocular surface, causing a range of frustrating symptoms including persistent stinging, burning, a gritty “foreign body” sensation, excessive watering (as the eye overcompensates), and fluctuating blurry vision.

Mr Arthur Okonkwo, a dual fellowship-trained Consultant Ophthalmologist based in Leeds, understands that dry eye is not a “one-size-fits-all” condition. Simply prescribing standard artificial tear drops is rarely sufficient for moderate to severe cases. True relief requires accurately identifying the specific underlying cause of the tear film dysfunction—whether it is an aqueous deficiency (lack of water) or, much more commonly, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), where the oil-producing glands in the eyelids become blocked.

Following a highly detailed diagnostic assessment, Mr Okonkwo offers a tiered approach to management, progressing from tailored medical therapies to advanced clinical procedures. These in-clinic procedures are designed to directly address the root cause of the condition. Treatments may include the insertion of microscopic punctal plugs to retain natural tears, advanced Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy to reduce eyelid inflammation and stimulate oil flow, or mechanical meibomian gland expression to clear chronic blockages. By combining these advanced procedures with expert medical management, Mr Okonkwo helps patients achieve significant, long-lasting comfort and improved visual stability.

What to Expect

1

Comprehensive Consultation

A detailed discussion of your specific symptoms, lifestyle factors (such as screen use), current medications, and previous treatments you have tried.

2

Advanced Diagnostic Assessment

Mr Okonkwo utilises specialised diagnostic tests to analyse your tear film.

3

Personalised Treatment Plan

Based on the specific type of dry eye you have, Mr Okonkwo will formulate a bespoke, step-by-step management plan, discussing which clinical procedures will be most effective for your unique condition.

4

In-Clinic Procedures

Depending on your plan, you may undergo procedures such as the painless insertion of punctal plugs (tiny devices that block tear drainage), amniotic membrane or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy to reduce inflammation, or mechanical expression of the eyelids to clear blocked oil glands.

5

Immediate Aftercare

These procedures are performed comfortably in the outpatient clinic.

6

Long-Term Management

Dry eye is a chronic condition that requires ongoing maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are punctal plugs and how do they work?

Punctal plugs are microscopic, sterile devices inserted into the tiny tear drainage ducts (puncta) located in the inner corners of your upper and lower eyelids. By partially or completely blocking these drainage channels, the plugs keep your natural tears, as well as any artificial lubricating drops you use, on the surface of your eye for much longer. The insertion is painless and takes only a few seconds in the clinic.

MGD is the most common cause of dry eye. Your eyelids contain dozens of tiny meibomian glands that produce a crucial layer of oil. This oil floats on top of your tears, preventing them from evaporating into the air. In MGD, the oil becomes thick and the glands become blocked. Without this protective oil layer, your tears evaporate almost instantly, leaving the eye dry, exposed, and inflamed.

Yes, when performed by a trained specialist, IPL is very safe. During the procedure, protective shields are placed over your eyes. The IPL device then delivers precise pulses of light to the skin around the eyelids and upper cheeks. This light energy reduces inflammation, destroys abnormal blood vessels associated with ocular rosacea, and gently heats the meibomian glands, melting the thickened oil so it can flow freely again.

For the vast majority of patients, dry eye is a chronic, long-term condition that cannot be permanently “cured.” However, it can be highly effectively managed. By combining a dedicated daily home-care routine with Mr Okonkwo’s advanced in-clinic procedures, the symptoms can be dramatically reduced, allowing you to live comfortably without the constant frustration of irritated eyes.

This is a very common and confusing symptom known as “reflex tearing.” When the quality of your tear film is poor (often due to a lack of oil from MGD), the tears evaporate too quickly, leaving the surface of the eye exposed and irritated. The brain senses this severe dryness and irritation and sends an emergency signal to the main tear gland to flood the eye with watery tears in an attempt to wash away the irritation, resulting in a sudden overflow of tears down your cheek.

Quick Info

Duration

The initial comprehensive dry eye assessment takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. In-clinic procedures like punctal plug insertion or gland expression typically take 10 to 20 minutes.

Recovery

There is generally no recovery time required. Patients may experience mild, temporary redness or a slight change in vision immediately following gland expression or IPL, but this resolves very quickly.

Specialist Care

All advanced diagnostics and procedures are strictly Consultant-led by a dual fellowship-trained corneal specialist, ensuring expert management of complex ocular surface disease.
